A milky, pale peachy-yellow faceted Witherite gemstone from Alston Moor, Cumbria, England.
It is not often encountered as faceted gemstones due to it low hardness, 3.0-3.5 on Moh's scale.
Named in 1789 for the English Geologist, chemist and botanist William Withering (1741-1799), Witherite is a rare barium carbonate mineral of the Aragonite group with chemical formula BaCO3 which forms in low temperature hydrothermal veins.
The gem on offer here displays the typical purple-blue fluorescence of the species when exposed to longwave ultraviolet light, as shown in image 3.
