A rare Tourmaline gemstone from the Batalha mine, Paraiba state, Brazil.

Tourmaline from this source is notable for a high copper content, giving rise to the brightly coloured specimens known in the trade as "Paraiba Tourmaline".

The copper in this gem has not been absorbed into the chemical composition, instead manifesting as branching metallic platelet inclusions which are within the gem.

The platelets have a morphology which is typical of native copper and they give rise to a unique schiller effect.
As the stone is rotated the tiny platelets gleam and shimmer, reflecting light from their surface.

This unique Tourmaline inclusion variety was featured in the Fall 1994 edition of Gems & Gemology.
Faceted examples of this material, no longer being mined, are very scarce and not often found in sizes over a carat in weight.

Image 5 is a magnified view of the highly reflective copper platelet inclusions.
