Thenardite is very rarely encountered as a faceted gemstone.
This anhydrous sodium sulphate mineral, chemical formula Na2SO4, forms from the evaporated deposits of mineral-rich, shallow playa lakes, the crystals rarely growing to sufficient size to be facetable.
The added difficulty to the lapidary is that Thenardite is readily soluble in water, making this large faceted gem from Saxony, Germany a true rarity.
As is typical for the species, most examples being heavily occluded, a rich inclusion field is visible within the otherwise translucent host.
