A rare Black Opal cabochon from Stayish, Ethiopia.

The gem displays a range of electric opalescent colour flashes and has a very dark grey (almost black) body colour which is entirely natural, unlike most "black opal" from Ethiopia.
Image 5 is a magnified view of the vivid opalescent flashes in this captivating cabochon.

It also differs from much of the local material in that it is a non-hydrophane variety of Opal, meaning it does not absorb water and is a more stable and durable as a result.

Gems of this Opal variety are not common, with this being a fine example of its type.
