A part-polished nodule of Spherulite from Thorntonloch Beach, East Lothian, Scotland.

Spherulites are small, spherical globules which form within semi-crystalline regions of vitreous, igneous rocks.
Their radiating structure is the result of an inter-growth of Quartz and and Feldspar.

When exposed to longwave UV light the spheres display a weak whitish-purple fluorescence, as shown in image 6. In shortwave UV light, the effect is more distinct, with the spherules glowing a bright white colour (images 7 an 8).
