Product Description

A superb translucent Smithsonite gemstone from Berg-Aukus, Grootfontein district, Otjozondjupa Region, Namibia.

Smithsonite is a rare zinc carbonate mineral, chemical formula ZnCO3, named after James Smithson (1765-1829), the British geologist and chemist who first identified the mineral and whose bequest established the Smithsonian Institution.

Gem quality specimens such as this pale yellow example are extremely rare and usually too small to be facetable.
