A rare cabochon of Sapphire crystals held in matrix rock from,Loch Scridian, the Isle of Mull, Scotland.

The flecks of dark blue Sapphire are just barely visible within the grey-brown Mullite matrix, an igneous thoeiitic basalt.

Despite being a somewhat unattractive gemstone, actually a dull and ugly specimen at first glance, with the blue Sapphire flecks being difficult to see until it is viewed in a good light source (and some magnification helps!, see images 5 and 6) this is nevertheless a very rare specimen of corundum from the British Isles from one of only two small occurrences.
