A man-made composite gemstone with a natural green Sapphire crown cemented to a red synthetic Ruby pavillion (base).
The colour combination results in a gem which appears a rich red colour when viewed face-on.

The upper portion of the stone is composed of natural green Sapphire.
The join between the two segments can be seen just below the table facet of the gem (images 4 and 5), and under magnification gas flattened bubbles can be seen trapped in the glue layer.

The lower portion of the gem displays the characteristic curved growth lines and zoning of flame-fusion (Verneuil) method synthetic corundum.
