A scintillating colourless synthetic Sapphire created using an unusual crystallisation method.

Intended for use in the heads-up displays in the cockpit of F35 fighter jets, it was created using the HDSM (Horizontal Directed Solidification Method) / LANCE and edge-defined film-fed growth which allows the drawing out of thick, high optical quality plates.

While not intended as a gem material, it has some commendable optical qualities, a a high degree of optical purity and a lustrous appearance.
The majority, perhaps all of the faceted material, was rejected by the manufacturer due to a slight contamination of Titanium.
This impurity is responsible for the purple fluorescence which the gem exhibits when viewed in longwave UV light (image 6).
