A bright cherry-red faceted gem of Cinnabar from Hunan province, China,

Cinnabar is a mercury-rich sulphide mineral which is extremely rare as single transparent crystals of any significant size.
This due to its hardness of only 2.0-2.5 on Mohs scale, a property which makes faceting extremely difficult.

This fine gem has outstanding clarity and transparency, at over 2 carats is a good size for the species and displays Cinnabars characteristic adamantine lustre.
