Product Description

A meteoritic fragment from the 15th February 2013 airburst over Chelyabinsk Oblast' in Russia, the most documented fall to date of a sizeable meteor and the largest since the 1908 Tunguska event.

Designated as a class LL5 ordinary Chondrite (type 4-7) with approximately 10% iron content, this superb example has an even, dark fusion crust, indicating that it separated from the main body of the meteorite early in its descent and entered our atmosphere as an individual fragment, surviving the intense heat and power of the arial explosion.

The majority of the meteorite, which was estimated at 20 meters wide and with a mass of 10,000 tons, was vaporised during its fall.
The remainder is believed to have sunk into lake Cherbakul, leaving a 6 metre hole in the ice and leaving almost no large surviving remnants, with only one ton of identifiable material having been recovered thus far.
Consequently, fragments such as this one are highly sought after.
