A very rare Zircon cabochon from Sri Lanka with a faint cat's-eye effect.
The green gem is a metamict Zircon, slightly altered by natural radiation, and holds a series of fine needle-like inclusions which run through the length of the stone resulting in the faint chatoyant band which can be seen travelling across the domed surface of the cabochon.
Images 4 and 5 are slightly magnified views of the inclusions and the silvery sheen of the cat's-eye phenomenon.
