A pale smoky-yellow Calcite gemstone from St. Johnsville, New York state, USA.
The transparent gem has an unusual inclusion scene consisting of bladed crystals of what have been tentatively identified as Marcasite, a form of Pyrite with metallic lustre.
While the identification remains pending further investigation, Clear crstaline inclusions in Calcite are generally an uncommon occurence.
Images 4 and 5 are magnified views of the inclusions which are distributed throughout the stone in random orientations and which glisten as the gem is rotated in hand.
Calcites extreme birefringence (double refraction) is evident as the inclusions and the rear facets are doubled when viewed through the table facet, as can be seen in the photomicrographs.
