A Beryl cabochon from Brazil with a chatoyant effect.

The gem is actually colourless, but appears a golden-brown colour due to a mass of aligned needle-like inclusions which run through it (magnified image 4).

These internal features are responsible for the Cat's-Eye effect which can be seen as a broad white band which appears to hover over the domed surface of the cabochon as it is tilted.
