An extremely rare colour-change gemstone from Bekily, Madagascar.
This highly sought-after Garnet variety, a member of the Pyrope-Spessartine series, has a remarkable colour-change effect, turning from an intense teal-blue in daylight to a vivid violet-red in incandescent light (image 2).
Unlike the gem on offer here, very few stones with a genuine blue colour are found, most exhibiting a greenish-blue colour in daylight.
The stone has a few rod-like inclusions visible to the naked eye (magnified in image 5), but this does not detract overly from the lustrous beauty and the vivid colours of this highly collectible gemstone.
The supply of these gems from the mines around Bekily is sporadic and, due to local socio-political conditions, production is dwindling further.
