A man-made composite stone with a crown and pavillion of natural, colourless Quartz.
The gem was recovered from an old item of jewellery.

The colour of the stone is entirely due to a blue dye held in the thin layer of glue which cements the two portions of them gem.

On close examination the join between the segments can be seen just below the girdle of the gem (images 4 and 5).
Flattened air bubbles can be seen within the glue layer which has slightly de-laminated and now displaying yellow-white marks, as shown in magnified image 6..
