An extremely rare colour-change gemstone from Bekily, Madagascar.

This highly sought-after Garnet variety, a member of the Pyrope-Spessartine series, has a remarkable colour-change effect, turning from blue in daylight to a vivid violet-red in incandescent illumination (image 2).

The stone has a few visible inclusions, the rod-like growth features which are characteristic of the gems from this locale (see magnified image 5).

Unlike the gem on offer here, very few stones with a genuine blue colour are found, most exhibiting a greenish-blue colour in daylight.
