A rare gem named for its type locality, the Koshka valley, Badakhstan province, Afghanistan.
Afghanite is a chemically complex silicate mineral of the Cancrinite group which is usually only found as small crystals, rarely in massive microcrystalline form.
This large translucent gem displays the characteristic moderate orange fluorescent reaction when exposed to long-wave UV light (see image 5).
