A visually striking Quartz cabochon from Brazil with a host of features.
The most eye-catching of these is the array of brick-red and orange-red Hematite platelets which are scattered along a growth plane under the surface of the cabochon.
Image 5 is a photomicrograph of these charming internal features.
On closer inspection the Hematite has formed on a layer within the Quartz which displays a lilac-blue opalescent effect.
This unusual phenomenon is sometimes referred to as 'Girasol', the name being derived for the term attributed to certain Mexican Opals due to its similar appearance.
This is a rare occurrence in Quartz and is due to the presence of microscopic water droplets which were trapped within the Quartz during its growth cycle.
